I've been re-reading Den of Spies instead of Blueskies and just thought I'd take a peek at what posting you might be doing and Voila! So is trump thinking now is his chance to "take the oil"? The U.S. has always played duplicitous roles in it's entire history, thus it's not only trump's motivations in these tangled webs we weave. What did it mean for the Iranian government under Mossadegh to nationalize its oil industry? Didn't the foreign companies that were extracting the oil have signed agreements with Iran for a certain number of years? Did Mossadegh unilaterally terminate that deal in order to nationalize? Why?
If so, are we just giving Mossadegh a pass? Why? What were the foreign oil extractors doing that was so terrible? If his predecessor in Iranian leadership was corrupt and pocketing the proceeds illegally, couldn't Mossadegh in his new position have cut some sort of modified deal with the foreign oil extractors? Maybe he couldn't because the foreigners weren't having it - because he was socialist leaning - and they wouldn't negotiate.
Not excusing the foreigners in their interference in Iranian politics necessarily, but not giving Mossadegh a pass either - especially if a signed deal was in place. Two or more sides to every story.
